What is art?

What is true artistic success?

I'm still trying to figure this one out... I do know that I need to work on a solo album, finally get it out of my system. Once I get the first one out, it'll be easy to do more, I'm sure.

That's what I'm working on now. Finally get this solo album out. Ironically, it won't feature drums. Not the first one. The second one will...

Next Saturday it's back to the Juke Joint with a brand new quartet. As exciting as this may seem, it's also a risk. The Juke Joint usually has a built-in crowd, being that it's the premier jazz club in San Diego. The risk is that we are trying something new and exposing it to this new crowd. There's a definite chance that we will bomb, but life isn't interesting without risks. So we are going for it!

I am an artist.

I need to acknowledge that within myself. I need to cast away these demons once and for all.

I have a hard time accepting that I am an artist, perhaps because I don't consider myself that great. Because I know who the great ones were and wonder if I'll ever be like them.

Well, last night at the Juke Joint, I gave another drum solo that captivated the audience, seemed to impress them greatly. The cheers and applause felt amazingly good to me. The timing was just right. I've done this long enough to know that it's all a matter of timing.

I've done many solos that weren't quite spectacular. But the one last night was a great one. It was one of my best. It felt special to me.

I didn't realize the audience loved my drum solo until I made my way toward the door to go outside for some air. The audience then applauded me once again! That was a first for me.

It was a wonderful night at the Juke Joint last night. The place was wall-to-wall people. A pleasant surprise.
