I've been pretty geeky lately, so that's why you haven't heard much from me lately... well, plus... if you are here you know about my webhosting issues and if you're not here... well, you've probably stopped trying to reach my old site location and haven't been emailed this temporary address. But, I'm still hopeful... the problems will be fixed soon enough...

random notes

I'm back to what I call "random blogging style", at least for a while until I get my domain issues settled.

Jeez, it's so frustrating just trying to transfer a couple of domain names to another webhost. I used to be with DreamHost.com (which Pat has referred to as NightmareHost). I finally found webhost that will give me full access to cgi-bin, so now I can do the programming that I've wanted to do all along, but couldn't afford to pay the higher fees before with the old host. So, now I'm brushing up on my C programming skills and learning all about PERL!

So, it's been a month since my uncle passed away from a stroke. And now one of my aunts in the Philippines recently suffered a stroke! I guess my Dad's side of the family is prone to them. And that got me to thinking about my own health issues. And a few days ago I had a complete physical which I've been doing every year since I turned 40. And I found out that my blood pressure is close to the borderline high blood pressure levels. What with the incidence of stroke in my family, I naturally began to freak out over my own health issues! So, now I'm drastically changing my eating habits and getting into a serious training program to bring my blood pressure down considerably for my next visit in 2002.

Anyway, things have been so busy for me. I know some of you had emailed me a while ago, and I must sincerely apologize for not returning them quicker. And my domiain problems have put me on the phone and emailing people. I'm not really getting any response trying to resolve this whole domain fiasco. It's really getting ridiculous, people!

So, I promise that I will return email soon when I get to a point where I can really send you all a sincere, well thought out message, instead of something on the lame-side.

And if you've found my temporary URL, then I'm happy you've made it here! Thanks for dropping by. Don't change any links to this address just yet. I'm supposed to resolve this soon, hopefully. I'm hoping maybe by the end of this week I'll have my regular domain up and running... and if not? I'm going to really scream! Or maybe I'll scream right now! Well, no you all know my dilemma... sheesh! I hate domain transfers and DNS! More later...

a tough night for a musician

"We stand in our own shadow and wonder why it is dark."
---an old zen saying

elieve me! The above quote is spinning round and round in my head as I try to find wisdom in its meaning. For I seem to be always standing in my own shadow and trying to find a way out into the sunlight.

In general, yesterday was a very tough day for me. For one, the gig last night at Valentino's was a nightmare for me. Oh, I didn't show it on the outside, but on the inside I was suffering. It was a very, very tough crowd early on. When people stare at you angrily while your on stage trying to play your best, it makes it tough to perform. And I still have to smile and try to play my best. I don't know what's up with people. We're a decent band, and speaking for the band in general we draw upon years and years of musical experience performing live. Why is it that people seem to not appreciate our performance?

The music we play at Valentino's caters to our kind of audience, the older folks who grew up on Sinatra and big band and swing. Well, I just wonder about people sometimes, because it's my job to make sure there somewhat entertained.

Oh, Valentino's is quite a challenge. The owners don't want the band to be too loud, and the whole scenario is for the musicians to be "background music". But it's a job like anything else, but we try to be as creative with our musicianship as possible while still compromising for the given situation.

sensory
mood: overshadowed
music: some classical
cuisine: once again, pizza
Not to say that everyone seemed to hate us last night. There were at least three tables full of people who REALLY dug the band. And they showed it with applause and cheers. That saved the evening from becoming a total disaster.

You're probably thinking that I'm over-reacting a bit, but the bottom line is that if we are perceived in any negative way by the people as a whole, and the owners, then we're pretty much out of that place for good. Fortunately, Donnie (the singer) has quite a following in that area and so he's managed to perform there for close to a decade!

Well, it's the people who appreciated the music that make it all worthwhile. And one woman very loudly said that the music was much better than the food! Okay, go figure! I DO think the food is spectacular there at Valentino's, really. And the regulars I'm now noticing are the ones who like to dance in the aisles.

On a positive note, we just found out that we'll be performing at Valentino's on Valentine's Day , so that's a very good sign. They've got other bands performing there, and for the owners to pick us over their regular Wednesday night band is a good indication where we stand.
