shifting formations of clouds

It was another whirlwind day today, both above and on the ground. It doesn't matter how the wind shifts, or how its coolness chills the soul. What matters is how we move with the changing weather and seasons.

It's been overcast throughout much of the day. It would clear up at times, but much of the day was dark and cool.

The weather here has been overcast and dreary these past few days. Autumn is definitely upon us. Something about it chills my soul. And I made a nice hot bowl of soup... it made my day.

At times the blue skies would peek through. Clouds, soft and white would float overhead, constantly shifting into various formations.

The sudden appearance of blue skies brought some happiness within. I love the color blue, I suppose because of blue skies. Right now a cool, refreshing breeze blows by, and makes me think of flying kites when we were kids.

once upon a night

On the way home from Valentino's last night, I again played Once Upon A Time on the CD player. I can never get enough of this tune for some reason. And I played it for my wife and she complained that it was putting her to sleep.

Well, music with such "lush" strings CAN do that, especially if you're a person raised on guitar/bass/drums type music. Listening to orchestral music is a "different animal". You have to listen to it in a different way, otherwise it doesn't do anything for you.

Anyway, I cranked the stereo up exceptionally loud. Especially with "quieter" music, you can hear all the subtleties with this type of music.

Cami redesigned her web site and I really like the new look. It makes me want to redesign my own site.

But then again, I've been rather happy with the current design. So I'll probably just make little, more subtle changes to it without having to start totally from scratch.

The gig last night at Valentino's went well.

I approach this gig as a challenge for me. First of all, as a drummer I have to play very, very quietly because of the acoustics. And even with brushes I can be loud. And secondly, the audience (because of the layout of the room and the location of the band) can be a tough one.

But I figured out a way to get more applause from the audience, and that is to do my quiet drumming thing, but then when we get toward the end of a song I raise my volume and do certain drum fills to cue the audience to clap. It's a subtle thing, especially with this situation, but it's quite effective. I can't wait to try it out again tomorrow!

I also like playing Valentino's a lot because I get to leave my drumkit overnight... one of the few gigs where I can do this.

Tammy's new web site looks awesome! Too bad I can only view it in Internet Explorer. Well, I use both IE and Netscape, so it's no big deal.

Pat chimes in regarding my very painful leg cramp, the one I woke up to this morning. Thanks Pat for relating your own story. That must be a dreadful experience, getting a leg cramp during a water polo match and sinking to the bottom while in pain. That's rough, man!

Another gig at Valentino's tonight.

Kaycee, I am so happy that you're walking around again!

I've decided to save my money by brewing my coffee at home, at least for 90% of the time. The Kenya coffee beans brewed this morning really "hit the spot"! Hmmm...
10:12 AM ~

Like a blaring fire alarm, I had awakened suddenly, gripping my right calf muscle for dear life. The pain was sudden, and extreme. I grabbed my leg as I realized that I had gotten a cramp, as it spasmed to the size of a softball.

The pain...

It seemed to last an eternity, but in reality maybe ten minutes. As soon as the pain subsided, I sat up at the edge of the bed to see if I could walk. As soon as I put the weight of my body on my right leg, I half collapsed in agony.

It had been years since I'd gotten a severe cramp like this, and it usually would strike sometime in the early morning hours while I was asleep. This was an exceptionally painful one. And at this very moment I'm still limping around the house. I'm afraid this could affect my performance tonight.

Wish me luck

My twelve year old niece had an article published in a local Santa Barbara newspaper regarding "reality tv". It's quite good for a seventh grader. We're all proud of her!

I'm beginning to feel like Joe regarding my coffee intake. But that's the problem. I haven't been drinking that much coffee, and so I guess I'm going through caffeine withdrawals right now. So Joe mentions his alternative... drinking green tea, and he's been having some good results. Well, I DO have green tea in the house already. Maybe I'll start up...

Once Upon A Time

I at least owe you an explanation for the link above, otherwise it would just seem that I'm throwing in a tune for filler or something.

I've been playing this song over and over again, both in the car stereo and in my head. I'm like that sometimes, obsessing over a song, listening to it several times and letting the soul of the song become a part of me.

I'm not a big Frank Sinatra fan. Nor do I have a large collection of Sinatra records and CDs. I simply had to buy this one particular album upon hearing the song on the radio while traveling to Las Vegas for a gig at the Hard Rock Hotel.

It didn't matter that the album was one of Sinatra's best (a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1965), nor the fact that the album contains the classic song, It Was A Very Good Year. I just had to get the album for the one song... I was that much in awe with this song.

Anyway, I would go over the lyrics in my mind. Such beautiful, timeless words that seem so clear:

Once upon a time
a girl with moonlight in her eyes
put her hand in mine
and said she loved me so

As the strings cascade over Frank Sinatra's incredible, soul-stirring voice, I can feel the bittersweet memories of longing for youth, of past romance. Maybe the coldness of Autumn had suddenly made me think of the past...

Once upon a time
the world was sweeter than we knew
everything was ours
how happy we were then

Not that I am unhappy nowadays, but something rings true about these words. And causes me to look back at my life.

I realize that we all should push ahead, to live in the here and now, but sometimes it's necessary to look back at the past in order to gain a perspective of the present and future. And so I must reflect, as I listen to this song.

The Back-And-Forth Routine

Wednesdays have become a hectic routine for me... pick up the kids from school, take one kid to soccer practice, then rush home and get the other one ready for karate lessons. Then after dropping the one kid off at karate, I then get back to the soccer field in time to pick the other kid up. It was never really like this before, only recently.

And add the daily ritual of homework, a good two hour's worth, between that and preparing dinner for the family... it's a pretty hectic afternoon and evening for me. And by the time that's all done, it's time for bed!

Well, needless to say, I didn't get to the hospital today to visit my father-in-law. But my sister-in-law and my wife did today while I was doing the back-and-forth routine. He's doing well I was told. We are still waiting on some results to get back from the lab, but he seems to be getting better. He's totally into politics, and so he was checking out all the debate coverage on TV. So, you know he must be improving! Anyway, that's good news to me.

Ms. M of Comabound.com sent some "prayers and good wishes" to me and my family. Cyn sent a nice email too, wishing that my "dad-in-law gets better". And Cami sends "much love". Thanks so much! I will pass the thoughts and prayers along to my father-in-law.

At this moment I'm feeling quite well, actually.

Sending Good Vibrations Back To You

Last night I received an email from none other than Kaycee and her Mom, Debbie! They sent me their best wishes and prayers for my father-in-law who's still in the hospital.

Thank you so much. I was pleasantly surprised... and touched. Who would have thought... and I wish them the best always.

It's overcast today. But yesterday I was able to take a nice photo of the sky before the gray skies arrived.

I'm confident those blue skies will return...

Just One Of Those Days

I truly sympathize with you, Zannah. I'm having one of those days as well. I didn't sleep well at all last night. So I've been very sluggish today. Of course, I hadn't had my coffee yet... too tired to make it, or even go out and buy it.

I keep my head to the skies, as if expecting an answer from someone out there at any moment...

Situations Beyond Our Control

It's a beautiful, spring-like morning out there, but I wish it were just that... a beautiful spring morning.

We got back from the hospital late last night, and then it sort of hit me real hard. Sometimes things slip out of our control and we just have to hold on for the ride.

We found out last night that my father-in-law, who had been suffering from complications after routine minor surgery last week, now has malfunctioning kidneys and might have to go on dialysis. This was a shock to us, as my father-in-law (in his 70's) has always been very healthy and very active for his age.

So now we're seriously worried about his situation, as it came so suddenly when just a few weeks ago he seemed just fine.

I'd been sending my thoughts and prayers to Kaycee, who's been struggling with cancer, and now my father-in-law's situation is becoming more serious with his kidney failure.

Today I'll be focusing my thoughts and prayers to both of them, hoping they will get well soon.

Dark Angel had something for me on her site, a link to a Wav.file that contains the mantra, "Om mani padme hum", at least that's what it sounds like to me, I'm almost certain. I WILL loop it and begin my meditation. Thanks, Dark Angel!

The Bernardo Winery

I performed at the Bernardo Winery with Donnie today from 12noon to 2pm in Rancho Bernardo.

It was a lot of fun, not just the wine tasting, but mainly playing some music for an enthusiastic crowd. And we were able to open up so that I could use the drumsticks instead of the brushes.

My only regret was that I had forgotten my digital camera, so I wasn't able to take any nice pictures of the event. Most of the stores and eateries in Rancho Bernardo had a booth there so that we could check out their "goods" and fine food. All in all, it was a pretty "ritzy" event, but a lot of fun! I really had a great time on drums.

In The Eye Of The Storm

In the wee hours of the morning I find peace, the eye of the storm.

This weekend has been so hectic for me. I felt as though I had been bombarded by so much. I have three gigs this weekend, and with family stuff, it all converges into one very busy schedule.

Clouds ahead,
dark puffs of cotton,
sun's rays, breaking through clouds,
large white masses of illusion,
crowding a deep blue sky.
--Carlos

It's no wonder I enjoy looking up at the sky, standing in awe at this universe. My tiny little life and its problems seem to fade away in the glory of the skies. I guess that is why I keep looking up into the heavens. It helps to bring peace to my mind.
