Living In The Land Of Airheads
I don't know how us Southern Californians picked up the distinction of being classified as "airheads".

Is it because we appear to be so laid back here because of the ideal climate, the surf, beautiful sunny days where we just rollerblade or bike our way into oblivion? I mean, we've got culture here. Well, nowadays, anyone can be cultured anywhere. I don't have to be in New York City to appreciate opera, or musicals, or fine dining for that matter. And on the other hand, anyone can be an "airhead" anywhere too, like in Mystery, Alaska, or Kalamazoo.

I had a best friend who, after college, moved to NYC to get a job. He ended up living there for three years, and when he came back to San Diego he was completely changed. He was born and raised in San Diego, and grew up to be a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, and very friendly. Then he went to live in NYC. And when he came back after a few years I noticed he had turned into a total asshole! He kept saying how we're a bunch of "airheads" out here and that NYC had all the culture. Then I asked him, "Dude! Did you ever go to the opera or see a musical there in NYC?", and he said, "NO"... and then I said, "Well, I've been living here in San Diego all this time and I'm watching musicals and operas on PBS, and their fuckin' "LIVE" at the Metropolitan "fuckin" Opera!!! So don't go tellin' me I don't have culture!!!" End of story.

Well, I was reading something that Cyn wrote about one of her pals in NYC:

"...he described my cali entries as something i had to look up in the dictionary which was less than complimentary. i showed more range and depth back in the stinky depths of nyc..."

And her entry sadly reminded me of my former best friend who was born and raised a nice guy in San Diego, and then moved to NYC, and came back an asshole!

Soon after he returned we sort of parted ways... I guess his "finding himself" in NYC made him too arrogant and cultured to be hangin' around with ME... and so I guess we stopped being friends soon afterward.

Improving Sexual Capacity
This book, appropriately titled, Secret Sexual Positions: Ancient Techniques for Modern Lovers, is admittedly something I could find very useful. But I have to question the WORD OF WARNING at the front of the book that says, "Some of the positions were accomplished only after years of yogic practice... Please don't get stuck in a position you can't get out of." Well, you'd have to admit... it doesn't inspire anyone to go out and buy the book!

Bring Out The Fashion Police!
Okay... tell me what you think. Do you feel that Drew Barrymore and Tom Green might just be a tad bit "under-dressed" for a movie premiere? I mean, you'd think that these types of events are where tuxedos and beautiful gowns are a tradition. Well, guess again...

Wednesday Night Jazz Jam
I'm still trying to bounce back from this terrible summer cold! Heh! It seems a contradiction, doesn't it? "Summer Cold"? Well, not only has this cold zapped me of all energy, it is a major hinderance for me as I can't get out there and do all the things I should be doing because it's summer.

Anyway, last night I committed to doing a jazz jam session at Taste of Florence, a little Mom and Pop Italian Restaurant in the heart of Escondido. When I say "committed to", I mean that I didn't really feel like going because I was sick as a dog, but because I told them I'd be there, well... "I'm a man of my word".

Taste of Florence is a quaint little restaurant next to a couple of music studios and a music store. Scott, the guy who runs the B&H Music Store two doors down, is a keyboardist and he puts these jam sessions together. Well, this was their second one and they hope it will become a successful monthly gathering of jazz musicians, similar to some of the more popular jam sessions in the Gaslamp Quarter. Nate was the one who actually invited me down to this one, but he had to leave early to catch a flight in the morning to New York City.

The jam session went so much better than I had anticipated. A musician by the name of Rizzo played bass and he had a nice smooth, confident playing style. Kind of reminded me of Jaco Pastorius. But the theme for this evening was Cole Porter, and we performed all Cole Porter songs, mixing them up between latin-jazz and bebop influences. It was a great evening and I had so much fun, playing something much more free than what I'm used to doing. Even with my own band, there's some room for creative freedom, but we are basically a swing dance band and we have to stay withing certain parameters. Last night was so cool because we could take the music anywhere. If I wanted to change from swing to latin, I just had to do a two bar cue and everyone else would follow along. And when the other musicians wanted to do something, like break it down into a free time situation, then everyone would know and make the transition.

It was really a lot of fun for me musically. And it comes back to that philosophy about the best music to play not necessarily being something you'd be paid a lot of money to do. But we ARE paid in that the creativeness of the music stirrs the soul and touches our hearts... and that's what really matters.

A Day For Accidents
Today I witnessed three accidents out on the freeways. Coming home from the post office this afternoon I saw a truck turned up on its right side. As I came closer to the truck I noticed that no one was in it and that there were three people standing beside it. I thought to myself, "how could anyone experience such a thing and not get seriously hurt?"

Coming home from a jam session in Escondido, I was royally PO'd that CalTrans created only one lane from North County Fair all the way down to Poway Road!!! It was stop and go the whole way home, and then there was another accident ahead in the distance where my exit happened to be... and I quickly detoured, taking the Poway Road exit.

Well, guess what? On Poway Road there was yet another accident. A car had somehow hit the center divider and cut across the lanes and crashed on the right side of the road, its whole driver's side was ripped open. And as I passed the totaled vehicle, the ambulance sped away in front of me.

The Zen of Air Drumming
Speaking of the La Costa Resort and Spa, I had an experience there years ago playing a "hoity-toity" private function for some so-called prominent folk.

Well, to make a long story short, the coordinator running the event was a "total dick". He kept telling the band to turn down! I mean, we were already told in the beginning that we were to play light dinner music. No problem! We are professional musicians and we know how to control our volume. Anyway, this coordinator guy was really a first-class JERK, and he kept coming back to the band, repeatedly telling us to bring our volume down! After about the sixth or seventh time, we turned off all our amps, played a casssette tape of light music through our PA system, and then we actually "pretended" to be playing our instruments! The guy came over and told us that was "much better"!!!

We had the last laugh. Of course, I was doing my now famous "air drum" routine.

Sometimes High Paying Gigs Don't Pay
The other day I received an offer to do a gig with a big band at La Costa Resort and Spa near Carlsbad. I turned it down in favor of a little quartet gig in Rancho Bernardo. Although the La Costa gig would pay a lot more, I chose this low-key gig because it was two consecutive nights and I wouldn't have to breakdown my drums twice. Now, for a drummer, any opportunity in which you can be at a place two nights in a row is a real blessing. Musicians don't get that many opportunities to play a club or restaurant for two or more evenings in a row. And if you can, then it's awesome!

Well, I'm also committed to playing those Friday and Saturday nights with Donnie Finnell, and aside from that, I really love playing the lighter standards fare than doing a big band thing that would require 2-3 rehearsals before playing the gig. With Donnie, I just walk in and do the gig, and the style of music is much more free and improvised. In other words, more fun!

We're On HBO!!!
I actually received an email the other day from Chris Gattanella with HBO. He said that our featurette has been airing everyday on HBO for the movie, Last of the Blonde Bombshells.

The band was filmed "LIVE" at The Derby back in May. We weren't supposed to be in the movie itself, but instead we were used in the filming of a featurette that promotes the movie. It's supposed to be about an all-girl band back in the swing era, and The Derby, L.A.'s premiere swing club was included in the featurette.

Featured On Cyn's Ramblings!
I received a very nice email from fellow writer, Cyn.

I recently sent her a note voicing my lamentations and concerns about my "writer's block". And she replied with some words of wisdom and reassurance that I am certainly not alone in my dilemma.

I voiced my concerns:
Have you ever gone thru a creative block before? It's making me re-assess what the whole purpose of having a journal or blog on the web is for...

But I was pleasantly surprised that she had mentioned a certain photo being included in her latest entry, and even more surprised to find that it was this photo of my wife (then fiancˇ) and I that had popped up on her site.

Cyn, I'm very flattered... thanks! And she adds, "hang on to that wife of yours, Carlos". Yes, of course, Cyn! I can't thank you enough for your sage advice! I need to be made aware that I'm thankful to have her as a friend and soulmate. *all smiles*

Ugh! I am so "wiped out" right now! I caught a terrible head cold which got worse yesterday after Friday night in Los Angeles with the band, then Saturday at the Juke Joint in San Diego. Now I'm trying to get better.
