I have found out rather quickly that Iced Mochas from
Starbucks
will help me get energized for that next gig. Lord knows I need it for tonight! I'm still exhausted
from last night's gig at The Derby in Hollywood.
While driving around today, I was listening to Joni Mitchell's song,
Both Sides Now, and remember that when I was a kid I thought she said,
"I've looked at clowns from both sides now", but of course I now know that she actually
said "clouds"... but the thought of this caused me to laugh hysterically, and I couldn't stop
laughing until after the song was over! (sorry Joni)

I'm enveloped with a certain sadness, not really knowing how or why this sadness has come about.

It's after 4:30AM, and I'm pooped from the gig at The Derby and the drive down from Hollywood.
I've done this countless times, and it's always the same... I'm dead tired but I can't sleep and need to unwind!
So I usually check email and surf the web until I fall asleep in front of the computer.
I received a nice email from
Cyn.
She was commenting on my
wild head of curls,
and how I looked like a "cool cat"! Of course, she's referring to the
old photos on this site, the ones with the perm, back in the days when "big hair" was cool!

My Mirror Photo
I'm still waiting for the roll of film to be finished in the camera before I send it off for processing. On this roll are the pictures I'd been meaning to submit to
Heather's site.
Jeez, I can't wait to get the new digital camera!
English Choir Music
I have this strange desire to play some choir music and the only CD I could find for my fix was the "Christmas with
the Cambridge Singers" CD. I love them anyway. I love English Choir. Anyway, here I am in the middle of summer
and listening to Christmas choir music!

Okay, on a lighter note:
I mentioned in my last post that someone was staring me down while I was sitting in my SUV. Okay, here's
a site that just might explain
why
the guy was staring me down!
1:54 PM
~
Have you ever found someone staring at you, and in a very hateful sort of way?
Yesterday I was doing errands with my son, and I had just finished my business at the bank when I hopped
into the SUV, and then noticed this guy staring at me from the adjacent car. He was in the car to the right, and so as I
was conversing with my son, I could see out of the corner of my eye that he was still staring. Then I switched my
glance to focus on this guy, and he was definitely staring very coldly, and with a lot of hatred. But I just kept smiling
and talking to my son. I probably will never know what this guy's "trip" was, but it's sad to see there is still hostility
and hatred in this world. What's even more sad is that this guy probably was hating me for who I am... but I'm just
a person like anyone else. Well, a part of me says "who cares about this guy?", he's nobody I know personally, but
another part of me feels sad that life has to be this way sometimes... I just want everything to be "cool", but I guess
that's not going to always happen.

Heather
again writes some very interesting observations, this time about morning people versus
non-morning people.
As an admitted non-morning person (who still has to get up rather early), I am one "fricking" mess sometimes.
Blame it all on my musician life and schedule, because I'm one sorry "bloke" who has to unwind after gigs by surfing
the web, sometimes surfing into the "dawn's early light".

For you die-hard Americans who couldn't get enough of the Independence Day celebrations, here's a nice little
link.
12:25 PM
~
tuesday, july 4
Dear United States of America,
Today is your Independence Day, your birthday, although historians might dispute this fact. Anyway, I don't claim to be a scholar regarding your history or your politics, nor can I claim to be knowledgeable enough to criticize any of your faults. But I have noticed that many other nations, for one reason or another have spit on your flag, have burned your flag, and many of your own citizens have deeply criticized you in so many ways. But after all this, I still think you are the best country in the world, the best place in which to live.
And as your countrymen still criticize you, they should be thankful for the fact that they ARE afforded the freedom to criticize their own country, which makes this nation great. Other countries would consider it treason to do such a thing.
Sure, you have your faults, what country, or individual for that matter can admit to not having any faults at all. Just as we all are human and therefore not perfect, thus you as a country have your strengths and
your weaknesses. But I say you exhibit more strengths than weaknesses, and the ideals for which you stand are without compare.
I write this letter to you because my heart goes out to you when someone wrongly accuses you of doing something wrong, or of being the policemen of the world. I don't think that is the true intentions of your people. Instead, I see many good people helping others in poverty and in oppression. I see people who have followed the good of past leaders and citizens of their country in the hopes of making the world a better place to live.
And so I conclude my letter in saying that I love you as a country with high ideals and goals of world peace for all the world. I embrace you as a place in which to live and die. And I respect you as a country that has accomplished a lot and has done a lot for its people, as well as for people the world over.
And dreaming of the tattered and torn flag in which you have stood for in a patriot's vision, as it waves through the rockets great glare and the bombs bursting in air, I see the imagery that the truth shall prevail over all, and that the truth and justice for which you stand for, will hopefully ring true for other nations around the world, spreading peace and goodwill to all.
God Bless America...
from a proud American

Teri
says she and her beau are off to
Ikea
today. Funny how in the movie, Fight Club, the topic of buying Scandinavian furniture from Ikea pops up. It WAS a
neat special effect, how they made the condo slowly come to life with furniture as the camera scanned a once empty
living space.
Anyway, it's a beautiful, warm and sunny day in San Diego. Perfect for Fourth of July weather. Temperatures are up
to the low 80's and not a cloud in the sky! I suppose it could be just a little bit hotter, since it's summer.

My band, the
Uptown Boys,
have an exciting week planned. We'll be at the
Del Mar Fair
tonight on the Highway 101 Stage, 8:30pm, then on Friday we're back at
The Derby
in Hollywood, and then back at the
Juke Joint Cafe
on Saturday.
On occassion, you may find a movie star or two at The Derby, depending on the night. One night I was surprised
to find
Geena Davis
dancing to our music! I was honored, truly I was.

Being a musician, I have played for some of the wealthiest people in and around the Southern California area. I've
seen it all, and it depresses me sometimes that I more than likely will never attain that sort of wealth. It does
boggle the mind though.
One very wealthy family we played for had an estate with six garages, buildings actually, carpeted and
air conditioned, with garage doors that slide up. They own 110 cars! And they have a couple of full-time mechanics
to make sure the cars are all running perfectly. One of the newer cars is a 1.6 million dollar Lamborghini, a very rare
one, red color of course. They would only let me sit in the drivers seat, and it felt rather weird sitting in something
that expensive! I kept thinking in the back of my mind about eastern philosophy, that this was all an illusion, a veil.
But I still felt a thrill sitting in something I knew was that expensive!

My wife and I rented
Fight Club
on DVD... boy was I mezmerized! And the idea of raiding the dumpsters of "cosmetic surgeons" and taking the
plastic bags of fat sucked out from liposuction sessions to make soap is a pretty far out yet ingenious idea! Now I'll
never look at a bar of glycerine soap the same way again!

I miss my brother. He's been working the

for so long, he's never available because of his weird schedule. Well,
for the most part, I should accept it, since he's been doing the graveyard
shift for most of his working career. I guess he simply loves it. But we still
never see the guy.

I'm going to splurge today on Chinese takeout, being that Osee's sister and her family are here. After an afternoon
at the beach, we rented three DVDs... Girl, Interrupted... The Green Mile... and Seven Years in Tibet... a total
movie fest. I've already seen these movies but my sister-in-law and my nieces haven't yet, but I liked them enough
to watch them a second time... so here we go!

The Del Mar State Beach was a little on the cool side, which it usually is, about 5 to 10 degrees cooler compared to
the inland temperatures. The waves were nice. Nothing big and tall, but forceful and it pretty much wiped me out. It
was definitely invigorating.

<-- a note about today -->
It's a beautiful day today in San Diego! One of the best, I think. Ultra blue sky, no clouds at all, temperature
around upper 70's and a nice warm, dry sunny day. We're going to the beach today!

This is very weird and ironic. I just finished watching the movie,
Hanging Up,
starring Meg Ryan, Diane Keaton, Lisa Kudrow and Walter Matthau who portrays a dying man in the
film. This morning, I found out that he had passed on just yesterday from an apparent heart attack.
