There's been a little talk about blogs becoming boring, that people are running out of ideas, and that people are ready for something new, the next big thing. And you know what, people ARE always ready for the next big thing.

I feel that the weblog itself is an ingenius concept, and that blogger.com is the best thing to come along, giving the writer great convenience and facility. I enjoy reading others' weblogs because it takes me a little bit into the writer's mind, into his/her experiences. It's a good read, and to me it's always interesting.

Each and every one of us is unique and different, how can that be boring?

I found a link to some great desktop images. And, kaleidoscope is a project at gingerblue that is a gallery of web surfer's desktops.

I think "The English Patient" is a great film!
Here's a nice quote.

Morpheus:

"You take the blue pill,
the story ends,
you wake up in your bed,
and you believe whatever
you want to believe."

"You take the red pill,
you stay in wonderland,
and I show you how
deep the rabbit hole goes..."

<-- a philosophical moment -->
I feel like this wave upon the sea of life. As a wave I know I'll eventually reach the shore and cease to become the wave that I am. And although I am just a wave, I also know that I am a part of the sea, vast and enormous. Of course, when the wave is gone, it somehow returns to the sea, returning to that from which it came...

Someone told me recently that the world wide web is all fluff! Well, getting back to the subject of space exploration, I doubt that I would get a chance to explore space sometime soon. So, what better way to satisfy my "pioneering" spirit than to explore "cyberspace"! And this is something all of us have the ability to do, and it's easily within our daily reach. I think about the implications and I reason that outer space and cyberspace are pretty much one and the same... unexplored regions of our minds.

Reviewing this previous blog entry I realize I may have been a little harsh on the NASA program, it's just that I see billions of dollars being funneled into space exploration, and that's a phenomenal amount of money! But alas, mankind's dream is to explore space... or is it?

This article by Amit Asaravala explains eloquently the current state of blogging.

Okay, Derek conveys an optimistic view of weblogging, and then makes a surprising announcement to discontinue his weblog. I'm dismayed, but let me explain. His weblog was the very first that I had come across, finding his URL in the local newspaper regarding the recent popularity of weblogs.

So, granted, I respect his decision to move on, but at the same time I am dismayed as well. Weblogs are new to me, and I have embraced the concept wholeheartedly. Not just as the next fad thing, but as an invaluable tool.

I've pretty much "chucked" my online journal in favor of doing a weblog because it is quicker for me to update and I don't have to write as much, being that I'm a very busy person. Anyway, this is just my initial reaction... I know, I know... there comes a time to move on. But I intend to stay, at least for a little while longer. I love weblogging!!! I am just saddened by Derek's decision, as it was he who first inspired me to create my own weblog, and because his was the first I had seen, I feel this sense of sentimentality over this.

But life goes on, and I intend to keep on keepin' on!

<-- my rant for today -->
So they discovered water on Mars. *woop-tee-doo* I could've told them that, and NASA could've saved themselves billions of dollars if they had just come to me first. Meanwhile, people continue to die of starvation in Bangladesh and Ethiopia.

Okay, this is off the beaten path, but is in line with my appreciation for ethnic percussion. If you're into Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion, this CD "Bata Ketu", kicks major you know what! The recording is superb!!!

A true-to-life sorcerer's apprentice? I read "Tales of Power" long, long ago in a galaxy far away, it seemed. I still have it on the bookshelf... just might give it another read for old time's sake.

We already have The Wizard of Oz on video, but it's tempting to get the DVD for the "extras". The OZ movie is one of the first movies I remember as a child, and we would watch the movie every year when it came out on TV around October, as if it were a tradition, and it was... I guess before all the "special effects" movies came along, OZ was the one to see. For a movie coming out of 1939, it had awesome special effects for its time. Too bad "The Wizard of Oz" came out the same year as "Gone With The Wind". Perhaps it would have received more Oscar recognition. My oldest son was in kindergarten when he first saw the movie, and he really "freaked" when Dorothy's house took to the sky and then landed in OZ. We really had to do some consoling there, and ease our son's fears.

Okay, I've finally calmed down after someone had "keyed" my SUV. And although this was a hate crime, it is very minor compared to the horrific hate crimes that have happened in the last few years. It just makes me wonder, that's all...

<-- a letter to someone who keyed my car -->

Dear Perpetrator,

I know you feel justified in doing damage to my shiny new, black SUV. Okay, did that make you feel better? Does damaging someone else's expensive property turn you on, or does it tell us that you can't afford one, and because you can't afford one you feel so much better damaging the very thing you wish you had. I for one pay my bills, pay taxes and struggle to make a living like anybody else in this world. Why set me back by damaging something that I worked so hard for and continue to make payments on? I'll never understand this, but something should be done to fix this, and it looks like it's going to come out of my own pocket. Next time, think before you act out in anger or in frustration. And remember, what goes around comes around...

Signed,
the owner of a shiny new, black SUV

I'm listening to 'The Planets' by Gustav Holst, specifically getting-off on the middle section of the Jupiter movement, in which this lush, sweeping English folk song appears out of nowhere... like the eye of a storm compared to the rest of the movement.

I laughed when I read Heather's entry! I'm the same way. A numerologist once told me that "4" is my lucky number. So, I'd catch myself doing things in multiples of four. Yes, I know it sounds looney, but ya never know...

I'm also thinking of the sons and daughters who have lost their fathers. My brother-in-law, Joel, passed away in January 2000. He was 44, and he has a son named Michael.
2:44 PM ~

It's Father's Day, and I'm thinking about the fathers who have lost their children. I feel that's the biggest-cross-to-bear... outliving your own child. I came upon a touching site for parents lamenting the loss of their children. Myself, I have a lot to be thankful for today, but my heart goes out to those parents who have lost a child.

It's a given... as long as we have the Internet, there'll be hackers out there to ruin it for everyone. So the latest word is that a hacker was able to gain access to AOL employee accounts and thus tap into a few personal accounts.

I just got a call from Tony, co-owner of The Derby, and a date has been set for next month. I'm pretty excited about going back to L.A. for another gig at this famous swing club.

<-- recent movies seen -->
We rented the following movies on DVD...
Mercy is pretty much another drawn out serial killer movie, only this one didn't seem to go anywhere, and the lesbian and bondage scenes appeared to get-in-the-way, rather than help develop the plot. No wonder it pretty much went straight-to-video. The Green Mile, on the other hand, is a wonderful movie that shows the power of the human spirit, even amidst the confines of "death row". I know Tom Hanks has been in umpteen million movies, but they all have basically been great movies... this one is no exception.
